I prefer "Two Cherries" brand of woodcarving tools. I advise students to buy at least 1 or 2 of the highest quality tools you can afford rather than a cheap starter set. The most difficult thing to master in carving is sharpening! The higher quality woodcarving tool will last longer, sharpen easier and hold an edge. The cheaper lines will be constantly dull and will loose their temper quicker when trying to sharpen. In the beginning stages of carving a student can become easily discouraged and 9 times out of 10 it is due to trying to carve wood with a dull tool.
I began woodcarving with only 2 carving tools which were given to me as a present and can basically execute the relief woodcarving you see in my website with just those 2 woodcarving tools. I also advise using the long handled tools over the short or palm style, as they are easier on your hands and they are made to use with a mallet if needed.
Below are the woodcarving tools I would advise a beginner to start with in relief woodcarving. Tools are listed in the order I recommend. Good Luck !
